Reasons why you may be due an income tax refund.
Incorrect tax code
If your tax code is wrong, you may pay too much tax, as the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system uses it to determine how much tax to deduct. This can happen if:
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has the wrong information about your income.
You are assigned an emergency tax code when you start a new job, and it remains uncorrected.
You have multiple jobs and have been given more than one tax-free Personal Allowance.
You change jobs and are paid by both employers in the same month.
Changes in employment
- Starting or stopping work mid-year: If you work for only part of a tax year, you may not use your full tax-free Personal Allowance. For example, if you stop working partway through the year and don't receive further taxable income, you can claim a refund for the unused allowance.
- Leaving the UK: If you leave the UK to live or work abroad permanently partway through the tax year, you will likely be due a refund on overpaid tax from your UK earnings.
- Redundancy: Being made redundant during the tax year can result in overpaid tax, as tax may have been deducted from a severance payment at an incorrect rate.
