What is a P800?
A P800 is an official end-of-year tax calculation from HMRC that shows if you have overpaid or underpaid income tax through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system. It is not a tax return, and it is not sent to self-employed individuals who file a Self Assessment.
HMRC will send out P800 tax forms after the end of the tax year (the 5th of April). However, since the taxman's wheels tend to turn pretty slowly, you'll usually get your P800 between June and the end of November.
Why you might get a P800.
- You changed jobs during the tax year.
- You had more than one job or pension at the same time.
- You were on an emergency or incorrect tax code.
- Your taxable benefits, such as a company car, changed.
- You stopped working partway through the tax year.
